Indigenous houses of Vietnam

On my last visit to Vietnam, on the second part of the museum of Ethnology in Hanoi, they have a selection of original ethnic houses move and reconstructed in situ. I can appreciate the amount of work going into this large "living exhibition". I will add that it looks very authentic, giving it a similar feel to the cultural village in dayak and orang Ulu in Sarawak Borneo.

The Ede longhouse - has carved house support posts and ladders that can be compared to Naga (north east India) carving.

Carved step of the Ede - female breasts adorn the top of this step- the other side for the male.

The roof support beam with animal motif ,turtle ,lizard and on the other side ( not pictured) was elephant carvings.

A single piece of hardwood carved table . In my opinion a timeless style of simplistic artwork

Ethnological Museum in Hanoi, Vietnam

On my recent trip to Vietnam, I visited the Ethnology museum in Hanoi, the exhibits were from various of the 54 ethnic groups within Vietnam. With assistance from the French, it was a very well presented museum.

Here are some other tribal art images

A very expressive Jorai figure, this ( above) was my favorite.

Two other figures

A crane or heron and an owl sculpture

Woven rattan utilitarian baskets for daily use

A mask (unfortunately no further info on locality and tribe on the information plaque)

And a scarecrow....

All for today!

The Koi and its Legendary Meaning

The Traditions and In Depth Meaning of Koi Fish Tattoo in  Contemporary Body Fine Art

Tattoo by Marc Pinto

The Koi Fish Legend

The whole story about the koi fish has been around for generations of the Japanese culture. The koi in the story was said to have climbed a waterfall. The brave fish wanted it so badly that amidst it's little strength, the koi, fought against the strong currents and swim  through till he reached the top of the falls.

The Chinese version tells us though that it didn't end there yet. The koi swam the entire Yellow River and made it to the Dragon Gate. When the koi completed the journey, he was turned into a magnificent dragon.

The Meaning

Because of these stories, the koi tattoo has become a symbolism  for those who have made it through tough times and difficult situations.
It depicts individuals who survived a loss of a loved one, life threatening disease, abandonment, debts, calamity, hard life, and a lot more.  That through faith and determination that you can, nothing is impossible.

In a nutshell , you can find below the meanings behind the koi tattoo.

Power and Peserverance
Freedom
Courage
Good fortune
